Artist Note
Ken Johnson is an award-winning heritage feather painting artist. His artwork has been showcased in galleries all along the Gulf Coast of the United States. This particular painting was done as a reflection of a memory of a much older Northwest Florida when people used to live camp life existences. By this, the artist means they would have homes as well as houseboats, shanties, shacks, and cabins from which they would hunt and fish. Many fishermen would stay in these houseboats, anchored out along a river or bayou, that they'd use as a base of operations to run traps and fish. Over the years, non-natives moved into Florida and started outlawing this way of life. In many areas of Florida, it is now illegal to own and operate a houseboat. Feeling that a part of his heritage, and Florida's history, was being obliterated, he chose to capture this scene to tell the story of a different Florida. To depict a more simpler and peaceful time when people were more tied to the environment than they are today. Where the pace of life mirrored the pace of nature and each new day was treasured.
